Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in the year 2000 with a vision to provide IT knowledge, managerial skills and technical advancements and hence to address the demanding needs of IT industries and R&D sectors. The department is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The Department offers four years Bachelor degree programme, Two years Master degree programme and Doctoral programme in Computer Science and Engineering. The Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes will help our students for their productive careers in industry, academia, research and government sectors. The Doctoral degree programme focus on innovative research in the areas of Pattern Recognition and Image Processing, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Database Systems, Network Security, Mobile Communication, Bioinformatics, Parallel Processing, Cloud Computing and other related areas. To strengthen these research activities, the department has established a research centre which is recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University. The department faculty members have established themselves in nationally and internationally recognized research programs, including those of interdisciplinary nature.

Faculty Profile:

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering faculty strength include Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors with varied knowledge in different areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The department comprises of experienced and self-motivated and dynamic faculty members to deliver the state of the art knowledge in the domain of Computer Science and Engineering. The faculty members have undertaken many funding projects amounts to Rs. 3 millions from AICTE and DST.

Infrastructure:

The department has well equipped laboratories with Linux and Windows Operating Systems and equipped with the latest technology which is much needed for delivering state of the art software product. We provided an open learning environment to the student community so that they are molded to meet the grand challenges of IT sectors. All the advanced technical facilities will be provided to the students for their knowledge up-gradation. In addition, we have a digital library facility to access latest research works as well as books of recent versions in all the prominent areas.

In addition, we have grants from AICTE under MODROBS scheme to modernize the laboratory containing the state of the art computing devices to carry out industry/research oriented project works.

Students Strength:

The department has an intake capacity of 120 students at graduate level and 24 students at masters’ level. The department organize many technical fests at state level and national level which is a showcase event to motivate the students and to provide an insight into different technical skills and also to exhibit the strengths of our students. On campus placements will be provided to students and more than 50% of the students are placed in many of the renowned IT industries such as Infosys, Intel, IBM, HP, Wipro, Robosoft Technologies, Accenture and BOSCH.

Academic Contributions:

The department is committed to provide a solid foundation in Mathematics, Algorithms and Computer Science and Engineering fundamentals which are necessary to understand, analyze and provide quality solutions to address real-world industrial and societal problems. We train our students to gain knowledge and hence to apply basic principles and practices of computing based on Mathematics and Science to successfully complete software related projects to meet the customer business objectives and/or productively engage in research. The student awareness for life-long learning environment is created and also helps to prepare students for their post-graduate studies. The department aims to provide effective verbal and written technical communication skills and hence to function well in multi-disciplinary teams. In addition, as a matter of social awareness, a familiarity with professional issues in Computer Science and Engineering including ethics, issues related to the global economy and to emerging technologies is discussed through webinars and seminars by a group of intellectuals.

Research Contributions:

Apart from conventional Graduation and Masters programme, we have twelve students working towards doctoral degree in our VTU recognized research centre. There are nearly 130 research publications from the department since its inception, published in both National/International Journals/Conferences.

To name some of the quality research works, the department is involved in:
International Collaborative Workshop entitled ‘Emerging Applications of Computer Vision’, which is an Indo-Russian Collaborative Workshop, conducted at Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, during Nov. 2011. This workshop was sponsored by DST-RFBR agency.
Also involved in executing two International Collaborative Major Research Projects entitled ‘Mathematical models and morphological analysis based algorithms for image comparison and classification in computer based vision system’ and ‘Face recognition in 2D and 3D space’ funded by DST-RFBR agency during 2009-2014.

Co-curricular Activities:

In order to prepare our students to face the global challenges in IT sector and to prepare for competitions, we organize many technical activities in every year. Some of the activities conducted during the academic year 2015-16 include: IGNITE ’15, How To Program In C And Basics Of Data Structures, Workshop On Ruby And Ruby On Rails, Java With Netbeans IDE, National Workshop On Ethical Hacking, Aptitude Training, BYTESTRUCK ’15, Android Application Development Internship Program etc. These activities will help the students for their all-round development, to qualify for a better job prospectus and stands better amongst others. Our students (GLUG PACE) have designed and developed a mobile application called RAKSHAK, an automated tool to primarily aim for helping the distressing farmers’ community. The intention to develop the application was to protect farmers and farming related interests. The RAKSHAK is attempted to make psychological support available to farmers within no time. The farmers need to click on icon provided and automatically SMS are sent to multiple members of concerned authority. The application can track the user’s location too. We proud to mention that this tool was launched by ZP CEO Mrs. Sreevidya in the programme of ‘World suicide prevention day’ held at Netravati hall, Zilla Panchayat , Mangalore on September 10,2015 and appreciated by the farmers’ community.

The department is a very vibrant through nurturing of young talented minds of the department who are continuously getting engaged in different state level and national level IT events. Our department pays special emphasis on teaching and hands on practical work. The students get the opportunity to exhibit their innovative ideas, skills and potentials and discover a professional horizon for themselves. Our students consistently excelled in the highly competitive industrial environment and I attribute this success to the winning combination of a dedicated faculty that works hard at imparting quality education to our students.

The research work carried out in several areas, namely Computer Vision, Biometrics, Computer Security, Distributed Computing, Databases and Information Management, Networking and Systems, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, Data Mining, Information Systems and Bioinformatics. Our staff members have contributed intellectually and professionally to the advancement of these fields with numerous publications in international journals and conferences. They have also successfully secured research/technology grants from several government agencies. Our department collaborates with many other institutions in India and abroad, and its doors are always open to a multitude of visitors and collaborators from all corners of the globe.

As a service to the society, our department organizes an annual event called BYTESTRUCK – which provide awareness about open source solutions and offer a platform for the high school and PU students to exhibit their talents. This mega event helps in spreading the awareness about IT developments to the bright young minds and is witnessed by the renowned academia and industry people.

Seat Allotment

The allotment and distribution of the seats are as follows

  • Common Entrance Test (CET) by Government of Karnataka - 40% Seats
  • Management Quota – 60% Seats

CET admissions procedure

CET is conducted every year by the government of Karnataka through the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). Only Karnataka students can appear for this entrance exam.

The seat allocation depends on the rank and choice of the student. The fee structure is decided by the Govt. of Karnataka every year.

Management quota admissions procedure

Candidates interested to join under management/ NRI quota has to collect the Brochure and application forms from the Admissions Office and submit the duly filled in forms along with the documents required and photographs. After the document verification, they have to attend the counselling session. Admission slip/ Payment receipts need to be retained for future reference.

Eligibility

The candidate shall have passed the Second year Pre-University of XII std or equivalent examinations with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following subjects: Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Biology/ Electronics and shall have secured not less than 45% of the aggregate marks in optional subjects with English as one of the languages of the study. 40% marks in case of Karnataka candidates who belong to SC, ST and OBC.

Scholarship

Department Library

Department Library is the knowledge centre of the department. It was started in the year 2004. Ever since then, we have expanded the library by increasing the number of books & facilities. Today we have around 900 technical books pertaining to the various subjects in Engineering, Master’s and research discipline. Keeping placement in mind, we have maintained a separate section for Quantitative Aptitude books, English Vocabulary, Verbal & Non-verbal books, Puzzles & Group discussion books. Over the time, we have maintained 400+ Project Reports, Seminar Reports and Magazines. Digital medias such as CD/DVD’s are additionally maintained containing Open Source software and operating system and CD/DVD supplied with text books. Apart from the above facilities available, we have a Digital Library comprising of 4000+ e-books. The department library provides the book bank facility where students are allowed to keep the book for the entire semester and return after their semester exams. The facilities provided by Department Library are being effectively utilized by both faculty & students.

  • 12th AUGUST 2015 - IGNITE ’15, an inaugural event of Student forum called as GLUG. During this event, we released MATRIX-OS developed by GLUG team.
  • 14th AUGUST 2015 - The GLUG team organized a one day workshop on HOW TO PROGRAM IN C AND BASICS OF DATA STRUCTURES to the second year students.
  • 22nd -23rd AUGUST 2015 - An Inter-college State level workshop on Ruby Technology: RUBYAND RUBY ON RAILS is organized by GLUG team.
  • 11 th SEPTEMBER 2015 - The GLUG team trained the students on latest technological developments in JAVA WITH NETBEANS IDE.
  • 12th -13th SEPTEMBER 2015 - The national workshop on ETHICAL HACKING is organized by the department which addresses ethical hacking technology aspects with the help of GEEKS LAB, New Delhi.
  • 20th SEPTEMBER 2015 - A professional training programme on APTITUDE TRAINING is organized by the department to the students for better job prospectus in IT Industries.
  • 4th NOVEMBER 2015 - An Open Source Solutions Awareness Programme called BYTESTRUCK ’15 is organized to High School and PU Students along with a project exhibition event to showcase the talents of young minds.
  • 20th -26th JANUARY 2016 - A project based Internship Programme on ANDROID APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT is organized by the department where students from different Institutions participated in this event.
