EUREKA: International Workshop on Research, Writing and Publishing (Inaugural Ceremony)

P. A. College of Engineering conducted a three days International Workshop on Research, Writing and Publishing from September 1-3, 2016. Workshop was organized by Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation (CERI @ PACE). The program was co-ordinated by Dr. Ramis M.K (Vice Principal) and Dr. Zahid Ansari (Dean Research).Dr. M. Abdul Mujeebu, Associate Professor, University of Dammam, KSA, Dr. Ritesh George Menezes, Professor in Forensic Medicine at University of Dammam, KSA and Dr. Zahid Ansari, Professor in Dept. of CSE and Dean (Research) were the resource persons for the workshop. There was around 80 participants including   was 80 international participants who is currently pursuing their ph.D.  

Inaugural Ceremony

The inaugural function was initiated in the presence of Dr. S. A. Khan, Professor IIUM, Malaysia as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present were Dr. Abdul Sharief- Principal, PACE (President of the program), Dr. A. J Antony- Dean (Student Affairs), Prof. Surfraz Hashim- Director Academics and resource persons. 

The workshop started with a welcome address of the Coordinator Eureka and Vice Principal Dr. Ramis M.K. In his address he briefed about what the workshop will cover-Research, Writing and Publishing.The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. S. A. Khan. In his inaugural address he emphasized for the full involvement in research and taking inspiration from the nature quoting the example of bird movements and invention of airplanes and more advanced missile technology and flying objects. The resource person Dr. Abdul Majeebu, stressed on identifying the potentials hidden in us, utilize our skills, facing the challenges and fulfilling responsibilities towards solving the problems. The other resource person Dr. Ritesh George in his address quoted that Science & Technology does not exists until and unless it is published, therefore it is said that “Do not publish and perish”. Now due to unethical publications it is also true that \"Publish and perish\".


We also had honor of listening the key note address by Dr. Byrappa, the honorable vice chancellor of Mangalore University. He shared his experience of research in foreign universities in 64 countries and a strong message of interdisciplinary research. He also quoted that teaching is an art and we become master when we carry out research. Further he said India lost Nobel Prize in 1953 because of not publishing the paper related to stem cell. Which after 15 years, the same work was published by an English university and they won the prestigious Nobel prize for that. He explained the importance of publishing quality and timely papers and practicing of writing down the daily work done.

We also had an opportunity of listening to Executive Director PACE, Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim and from the President of the inaugural ceremony and Principal PACE, Dr. Abdul Sharief.

Executive Director, PACE, said that without research, the advancement of technology remains a fantasy. He talked about the importance of research contribution to the society and nation for better job creation. Dr. Abdul Sharief Principal PACE motivated the audience for research and said that research requires sacrifices and working beyond official timings. Dr. A.J. Antony quoted a funny statement about Research that, “Doing research is like finding a black Cat in a dark room where the Cat not at all there in the room”. He shared various struggles of doing Research during his PhD studies, in 1980s.

EUREKA: International Workshop on Research, Writing and Publishing (The Program)

The first session started on motivation to research by Dr. Abdul Mujeebu and inspired the delegates for research excellence and stressed that, it is Not Beyond our Reach. He also discussed the Basic Attributes of the Research. The subsequent sessions were comprised of presentation by Dr. Abdul Mujeebu, exercises, hands-on sessions with prior material provided to the delegates. The workshop was extensive, inspiring, and workable with in depth coverage of various challenges during the identification of the problem, literature survey, writing proposals, thesis and publishing articles. In subsequent sections he sequentially covered 

• Identifying a research problem - Literature review, 
• Problem Statement and Objectives Technical Writing, 
• Thesis organization,
• Citation and Referencing,  
• Research/technical journal article- How it differs from thesis, 
• Title, Abstract and Introduction
• Methodology, Results, Discussion and Conclusion
• Final shaping, Selecting journal, Submission and addressing reviewer comments

In the workshop, one session also covered tools for research writing i.e. Latex by Dr. Zahid Ansari. On the final day Dr. Ritesh took a session on ethical issues related to the research publications.

EUREKA: International Workshop on Research, Writing and Publishing (Valedictory function)

The valedictory program of the workshop was conducted on 3rd September 2016 in the presence of eminent personality Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Registrar Nitte University, Dr. Mohammed Fazle Azeem, Chairman  Department of electrical engineering, Zakir Husain college of Engineering, AMU, Dr. Mashooqunnabi, Associate Professor, Dept of Electrical Engineering ,IIT Delhi, resource person of this workshop Dr. Abdul Mujeebu, Dr. Ritesh George, President of this ceremony-Principal, PACE: Dr Abdul Sharief, Vice principal pace and coordinator of this workshop Dr. Ramis M. K, Director academic, Prof. Surfraz Hashim, PACE, Dr. Zahid Ansari, Dean Research, PACE and coordinator of this workshop, MBA Director, HODs of various department, faculty members of  PACE, Organizers and participants of this workshop, Other Supporting staff members and Media persons. 

The welcome address and report of the workshop was given by Dr. Zahid Ansari in detail. Feedback was taken on stage, .  Thanks to their feedback, which gave the guests of the valedictory function a clear overview of the usefulness of this workshop relative to other research methodology workshops. Dr. Moodithaya, impressed by the awareness created through this workshop regarding research and publication, expressed magnificent energy to the gathering to carry out quality and timely publication. He also addressed various issues in academia and research. 

Dr. Fazle Azeem , Aligarh highlighted the importance of research . Dr. Mashooqunnabi focused on quality and quantitative publications required for an academician’s growth mentioning “Publish and Flourish”. Dr. Abdul Sharief stressed on issues faced by research scholars and its outcome. Professor Surfraz Hashim superbly presented his talk on balanced and successful life. He conveyed that everyone should give priority to health, family and then research and balancing them properly to have a successful life overall. Dr. Ramis gave the remarking address on doing research and publication in ethical bounds.

Distribution of certificates to the participants, memento to the chief guests and resource persons was carried out at the final stage of the valedictory program. Mementos and certificates of appreciation were distributed to the organizing committee. The program ended with recitation of National Anthem.
