Industrial visit to the BSNL Telecom Exchange Office-Mangalore

An industrial visit to the BSNL Telecom Exchange Office was organized for the 4th-year Electronics & Communication students on 18-03-2022. The visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into the functioning and technology employed in the telecommunications sector. The students were accompanied by Prof. Mohammed Saleem, who guided and supervised the visit.
Mr. Pramod, a Senior Telecom Engineer at the BSNL Telecom Exchange Office, graciously hosted the visit and imparted comprehensive knowledge about various integral concepts and technologies used in telecommunications. During the visit, Mr. Pramod conducted an illuminating session where he highlighted upon several crucial topics, including:
1. Routers and Switches: Explained the functionalities and significance of routers and switches in networking.
2. WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing): Provided insights into the WDM technique and its role in transmitting multiple data streams simultaneously through a single optical fiber.
3. Multiplexing and Demultiplexing Techniques: Detailed explanation about the techniques used for combining and separating multiple signals for efficient data transmission.
4. Core Optical Network: Elaborated on the working principles and significance of the core optical network in telecommunications.
5. FTTH (Fiber to the Home): Explored the concept of FTTH, emphasizing its importance in providing high-speed internet directly to residences through fiber-optic technology.
The students were given a practical demonstration wherein they had the opportunity to witness and interact with various types of networking equipment. They observed different forms of routers, including Edge Routers and BNG Routers, gaining insights into their functionalities and applications. Additionally, they were shown Googles Cache Server and Facebooks cache server, providing them with a practical understanding of caching systems utilized by prominent internet services.
This visit was aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, empowering the students with a deeper understanding of telecommunications technology.
