Invited talk on “Integrated Solid Waste Management”
Mar 13, 2025 - Mar 13, 2025
The NSS unit of PA College of Engineering in association with Ignited Minds of Electronics Club organized an invited talk on “Integrated Solid Waste Management” on 13th March 2025. Dr. Palakshappa K. Prof and Head, department of Civil Engineering was the resource person.
The session began with a preamble by Prof. John Valder, NSS coordinator who introduced Dr. Palakshappa K. and provided context on the growing importance of addressing the waste management crisis. Dr. Palakshappa K. delivered an insightful presentation on the critical aspects of waste management.
Dr. Palakshappa K. spoke in detail about the composition of solid waste, highlighting the diverse materials that make up municipal solid waste, including organic waste, plastics, metals, paper, and glass. He explained that the composition varies based on factors like location, population density, and socio-economic status. The varying types of waste need to be handled differently to achieve optimal recycling and disposal.
A major part of the discussion was centered on the challenges in solid waste management. Dr. Palakshappa K. pointed out several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of public awareness, and the increasing generation of waste due to population growth. He discussed how improper segregation of waste at the source can lead to inefficient recycling and difficulties in managing hazardous waste. Additionally, the presence of non-biodegradable materials, particularly plastics, continues to be a significant obstacle in sustainable waste management.
Dr. Palakshappa emphasized that effective waste collection must integrate various systems, such as curbside collection, recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy processes. By adopting a more comprehensive waste management approach, cities can reduce landfill dependency and improve resource recovery. He stressed the importance of public participation in waste segregation and recycling efforts, calling it a key factor in making integrated systems successful.
During the event, Dr. Asif Hassan, Head of the Electronics and Communication department, and Prof. Mohammed Saleem were present to support the cause and engage with the audience. The event also featured the recognition of students who had conducted an awareness program on crucial topics like Digital Money Transactions, Drug-Free Society, Traffic Rules, and Digital Scams at DKZP Govt. Higher Primary School Nadupadav on 12th March 2025. These students were awarded cash prizes for the best poster presentation and best presentation, recognizing their efforts in spreading awareness on pressing societal issues.
