On November 14, 2024, the Department of Biotechnology at P.A. College of Engineering, Mangaluru, hosted the Biotech Alumni Conclave 2024. The event, themed “My Journey from P.A. College of Engineering to the Biotech Industry,” aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. The conclave provided a platform for students to gain first-hand insights from successful alumni, aligning their academic pursuits with the demands of the rapidly evolving biotech sector.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. Shainy Mathew, who set the tone for the day by highlighting the significance of such alumni interactions. Dr. Krishna Prasad N, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, followed with an inspiring address. He emphasized the value of connecting current students with industry veterans, noting that these engagements are essential for helping students understand industry trends and skill requirements, thus better preparing them for their future careers in biotechnology.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Pavan Maddodi, a 2014 graduate of P.A. College of Engineering and Senior Consultant at BMS OPS, Market Star, Bengaluru, shared his career journey in the biotech industry. With a decade of experience at leading firms such as Biocon, Syngene, and Marketstar, Mr. Maddodi provided a detailed account of his transition from an academic background to securing leadership roles in the biotech sector.
Mr. Maddodi attributed his success to the strong academic foundation laid during his undergraduate studies. He highlighted the importance of continuous learning and adapting to new advancements in biotechnology. He also spoke about his contributions to the development and approval of innovative therapies in the Indian biotech industry. Emphasizing the need for both technical skills and soft skills, he urged students to focus on mastering laboratory techniques, enhancing their communication skills, and excelling in teamwork.
The event featured an engaging Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to interact directly with Mr. Maddodi. He shared insights on topics such as downstream processing of therapeutics and emerging trends in the bioprocessing industry. The interactive nature of the session allowed students to delve deeper into the technical aspects of the industry, while also receiving practical advice on interview preparation and career planning. Mr. Maddodi encouraged students to stay updated on industry developments and incorporate new knowledge into their academic learning to remain competitive in the job market.
